Eclipse 2026 Lugo

The city of Lugo is preparing to become one of Europe's major observation centres for the total solar eclipse on 12 August 2026, with a large project for scientific outreach and knowledge transfer.

At 20:28 on the evening of 12 August, the Moon will completely hide the Sun over Lugo for nearly a minute and a half: the first total eclipse visible in the city since 1905 and the last until 4 October 2480.

Lugo is one of only four Spanish capitals from which all phases of the eclipse will be visible, and one of only two major Galician cities within the path of totality.

The astronomical event will be the central focus of an ambitious science outreach project led by astronomer Manuel Andrade Baliño (USC/CITMAga), featuring an extensive programme of public activities: talks, workshops, public observations with solar telescopes, distribution of certified eclipse glasses, and more.

Twenty-five research initiation grants will be offered so that university students can take an active part in this astronomical milestone.

The initiative is co-funded by the Spanish Foundation for Science and Technology (FECYT) of the Ministry of Science, Innovation and Universities. Active collaborators also include the Vice-Presidency of the Lugo Provincial Council, Lugo City Council, Caixa Rural Galega and the Spanish Astronomical Society.
